Chapter 2: R Markdown
The other part of this chapter is actually R code. I used to put all my code in the
Code section of my books. Then I realized that there are more ways to present information that are harder to change. In this case, it’s also possible to use an R markup language, like R Markdown. I’ve included some in this chapter. But I’ve been doing it in a very limited way as of now.
RStudio is a convenient software, which combines R program with text editor and graphical user interface (and offers much more, like organization of scripts and outputs into a projects within single folder, and for advanced users also convenient building of packages, document markup etc.). One thing I found a bit not handy is RStudio’s native graphical output – it offers its own unique sizeable graphical output into one of the subpanels (usually the bottom-right one), but it sometimes produces troubles (especially in case when you draw more complex figures). The workaround is to open the original R drawing panel – just type
windows () into the console, and new active window will open (you can move it around the screen, or right-click on it by mouse and select Stay on top to keep it as the top window always visible on your screen).
RStudio does not require a special version of R to run, as long as it is a fairly modern one (R 2.11.1 or later). It will work with binary versions from CRAN or user-compiled versions. As such, when RStudio starts up, it must be able to locate a version of R, which could possibly reside in many different places. Usually RStudio just finds the right one, but one can bypass the search process. The online document at details how to specify which R installation to use. In short, it depends on the underlying operating system. For Windows desktop users, it can be specified in the Options dialog (see The Options Dialog ), or chosen if the Ctrl key is held on startup. What is R-Studio good for?
Hadley Wickham commented in his blog post about using R-Studio to recover R files when your hard drive crashes. If you have ever lost important personal data, and you have ever tried to recover that data with anything else, than you know that it can take a lot of time. Hadley recommends R-Studio as a really easy to use R package for recovering data that is formatted in the little-endian character encoding. If your PC crashes when the hard drive is full, it probably means that you need a new drive and reformatting is certainly in order. It might also be the time to develop a better backup strategy. The RStudio blog posts from Hadley and other RStudio employees mentioned above provide a lot of useful information on how to safely back up your files.
When an R package is released, it takes several months to develop and only after it is released can you find out whether it is worth the time and effort. This resource is invaluable when you are deciding which R packages to incorporate into your R-Studio project.

How To Install R-Studio?
If you want to use the free, open-source copy of R-Studio, you can open the installer at any time; a dialog box lets you choose between installing in the default directories and customizing the location. The default locations would be fine.
If you are running a Windows-based computer, Microsoft has made R available on their website as an add-on for Windows 7.
You can also download R from the CRAN homepage. If you choose this option, youll need to wait for the download to complete. Ive never had any problems with that installation method.
