At the same time, Topaz Video Enhance AI does support partial-frame processing. Its relatively simple frame-filling feature is more flexible than AVCLabs and DVDFab. While AVCLabs and DVDFab do support partial-frame processing, it is limited to the application of one set of filters to entire frames. Topaz Video Enhance AIs feature makes it possible to apply multiple sets of filters to the same video frame, and that feature is a welcome step forward. The one significant drawback of this level of processing is that it is extremely slow. I strongly recommend using the non-complex models until youve gained experience with this feature. A single 200 percent model yields a surprisingly high 10 percent gain in file size while the complex models are simply not worth the hassle.
Topaz Video Enhance AI 2.6.4 applies a single set of features to a single frame. It is a useful tool to quickly upsize some video but is not the final solution. It doesnt allow you to quickly decide which model you want and you are forced to use either the non-complex models or the complex ones if you want something better. I prefer to use a 0.5x resolution source that is 100 percent compressed to get the best result without risking cropping or changing the aspect ratio. This is most easily done with either a TV tuner card or an over-the-air digital antenna. Topaz does support muxing separate files if you have plenty of CPU power and want to copy the contents of one file into another, but that is a rather low-level process. If you do this with lots of files, it can consume lots of memory.
The presence of chiptune music means topaz upscaler almost exclusively functions as a video converter. It doesnt deinterlace or denoise video as well as any of the other available deinterlacers, but it handles other video conversions (muxing and demuxing) much faster and more reliably than any other converter I have used. This is especially true for newer source formats that take advantage of hardware acceleration to perform the operations required by a modern video upscaler. You should try out the free trial first, if possible. Even if you think youre not a video converter type person, you will be surprised at how much you come to rely on video software like this in your daily life. Everything you see in video seems to be manufactured on computer these days, so a general video converter/converter/enhancer with the capability to upscale video content for better quality is a must.

But for deinterlacing, deinterlacing, and noise reduction, Im generally not going to try the deinterlacing algorithms behind Topaz Video Enhance AI 2019. Theyre not as reliable or useful for all videos as the straightforward algorithm in VEAI. If your videos require complex deinterlacing processing, youll need to find a different app.
This is the second of two posts on application Ive written about. See part one here. In this column, I will review Topaz Video Enhance AI and Cupscale and Part II: (What are Topaz Video Enhance AI and Cupscale).
Video quality enhancement is tricky, because what looks great to one person can look terrible to another. Theres no such thing as a universally good solution, so I recommend a couple of different apps from different developer groups. One of the key differences between the VEAI and Cupscale offerings is in the quality of decentralized deinterlacing. For videos that need more performance or better features, I still recommend using Cupscale. If youre willing to put up with deinterlacing that might not be so great, try VEAI.
Im not against deinterlacing, but I prefer to use deinterlacing algorithms that arent terribly complex. Topaz Video Enhance AI Lifetime Version is still a challenge for me. I much prefer to use the deinterlacing algorithms in the non-GPU versions of the application. Its either so bad, or unreliable, that I,ve only used it for a couple of videos, since it seems like theres no point in using it.
Upscaling HQ (PSNR over 20) 1080P video to 720P can be done with just a couple of clicks with Topaz Video Enhance AI 2.6.4. So you can quickly upscale videos that are 1080p or 720p without paying any extra expenses. Moreover, you can also convert 1080i videos to 720p without losing any information. If you have an old-fashioned video camera that records on VHS tapes, this software will help you fix the imperfections in the video.
What’s new in Topaz Video Enhance AI 2.6.4?
The suite also includes several more sophisticated enhancement tools. For example, there is a renoise option that lets you decide if you want to reduce quantization noise. There is a motion blur option. You can get entire movies from a single video clip, including both audio and video.
Right now, the best all-around upscaler we know of is the Topaz Video Enhance AI. It has excellent filtering options, as well as the ability to improve a source even when the video source is already in high quality. It is the only product that has a built-in way to deinterlace video sources, and even if its not possible to use upscaling with the resulting video, you can often use it to improve the original video content.
The other free applet worth considering is the old 4.6-inch display version of AviSynth/VapourSynth. It is a little more capable than the 3.4-inch version and can handle multiple video sources. This is the approach we used when testing P-Spaces topaz converter.
Running the latest version of AVCLabs Video Enhancer AI for around a week, I got extremely inconsistent results. One day it produced excellent results, and the next it produced absolutely terrible results. This is a real danger if youre dealing with consumer-level, low-quality content.
I also tested DVDFab Video Enhancer AI for a week. While the quality of the output is leaps and bounds better than AVCLabs, it still has some serious problems. In particular, DVDFab is extremely sensitive to disc format, which makes it far more useful for archival work than high-quality video editing. Ironically, the quality of DVDFabs output is probably the highest quality output I have seen from a video enhancement AI, but it is still very prone to breaking. It can easily produce a picture that is shifted, zoomed, and rotated in a noticeable way.
